Head shape variation. Array of head shape drawings for named French soldiers, lawyers, and politicians, collected as part of an anthropological study. Others studied (not shown) included criminals. The vertical lines show the midpoint of each head, with some having one side of the brain more developed than the other. Measuring the human body is known as anthropometry. These diagrams accompanied an article by the French art historian Henry Havard (1838-1921). Artwork from the seventh volume (first period of 1891) of the French popular science weekly 'La Science Illustree'.
