Acid dehydration of sugar. Concentrated sulphuric acid is poured into a beaker containing icing sugar. This clip is run at twice normal speed. The sugar breaks down, its hydrogen and oxygen are removed as water. The reaction is strongly exothermic, much of the water is turned to steam that makes the mixture bubble up. All that remains of the sugar by the end is the black carbon.
