Herbig-Haro object 47, time-lapse composite. Hubble Space Telescope (HST) view of a Herbig-Haro object, a cloud of gas and dust formed when jets of gas ejected from young stars collide with nearby clouds of gas and dust at very high speeds. They are relatively short lived, lasting only a few thousand years. This clip shows the evolution over time of Herbig-Haro object HH 47, a jet expelled from a newborn star in the southern constellation of Vela. It was created by stitching together observations of HH 47 made in 1994, 1999 and 2008.
