Herbig-Haro object 2. Time-lapse footage created from Hubble Space Telescope data showing the evolution of Herbig-Haro object 2 (HH 2) between 1994 and 2007. HH 2 originated as a jet expelled from a newborn star in the constellation of Orion. Stars form from the gravitational collapse of a cloud of gas and dust. As infalling material spirals onto the new star, jets erupt from its poles to balance angular momentum. The jets collide with material surrounding the star, heating them and causing them to glow, forming a system called a Herbig-Haro object (HH object). The clip was created using observations of HH 2 made in 1994, 1997 and 2007.
