The colours show variations in temperature. The scale runs from white (warmest), through yellow, orange, red and purple to blue (coldest). This mammal is the tallest living land animal and the largest ruminant. It can grow to a height of 5.5 metres and weigh over a tonne. Feeding mainly on the twigs and leaves of trees, it is found on the grasslands and scrublands of sub-Saharan Africa. Giraffes have a single calf that is nearly 2 metres tall when born. This footage shows the giraffes radiating large amounts of body heat. The pattern of the heat radiated corresponds to the patches on their bodies, which reflect the anatomy of the blood vessels surrounding and underlying each patch.
