Vanadinite. A specimen of the mineral vanadinite (lead vanadate chloride). This mineral belongs to the apatite group of phosphates, and has the chemical formula Pb5(VO4)3Cl. It is found as small, hexagonal prisms, usually barrel-shaped. It is bright red to orange in colour. Vanadinite is a secondary mineral found in the oxidation zone of lead deposits. It is used in metal alloys and in the making of dyes and mordants.
