Jupiter rotating. Timelapse footage of features visible on the surface of Jupiter as the planet rotates. Jupiter is a gas giant planet, and only the tops of its clouds are visible. The famous Great Red Spot, a huge anticyclonic storm system, is currently shrinking in size. It usually resides in a prominent dark belt called the Southern Equatorial Belt, similar in appearance to the red-brown Northern Belt above. However the SEB periodically disappears, for reasons that are poorly understood. This composite from 2015 uses data from the Hubble Space Telescope's Wide Field Camera 3.
