Demonstration showing the miscibility of ethanol (alcohol) and water. The beaker contains water at the start, and ethanol is poured in. Water and ethanol are both polar solvents, and are soluble in each other in all proportions, a property known as miscibility. Polar substances have a separation of electric charge across their component molecules, which allows opposite parts of neighbouring molecules to attract each other.
