Springtails (Anurida maritima) aggregating on the surface of a rock pool. Anurida maritima is an air-breathing springtail (Collembola). It feeds in the upper intertidal zone on dead animals such as barnacles and molluscs. Its body is covered with hydrophobic hairs which allow it to float on the surface tension of the water, and it has the ability to survive tidal submergence and avoid hypoxic stress. Unlike other springtails, A. maritima cannot leap. It forms large aggregations such as this under pheromonal influence. Footage filmed at Llangranog, West Wales, UK.
