Lung function test. On the instructions of a doctor, a young man takes a deep breath prior to exhaling into a spirometer. The spirometer derives measurements of vital capacity, peak flow rate and forced expiratory volume of the lungs. Vital capacity is the maximum amount of air that a person can exhale after maximal inhalation. These values can be used to diagnose asthma or other lung problems.
