Animation of the electric field lines between two parallel plates of opposite charge. In the centre of the plates the field lines are perpendicular to the plates, but at the edges the field bends outwards. Such parallel plates are found in capacitors, and the outward curves of the field can be problematic for calculations. However if the plates are close together compared to their area, the effect is negligible.
