Scanning electron microscope (SEM) view of the proboscis of a glasswing butterfly (Greta oto). The proboscis is coiled up when not in use, but uncoiled into a long sucking tube when feeding on the nectar from flowers. The glasswing butterfly is named as its wings are not covered in colourful scales as is the case with most butterflies, instead having large transparent areas more like the wings of other insects.
