Test for hydrogen gas. The gas is produced from a reaction between a metal and an acid, in the test tube. When a lit splint is placed in the path of the gas, the flame provides the activation energy necessary to allow molecules of oxygen (from the air) and hydrogen to react, forming water molecules which condense on the mouth of the test tube. Sound energy is also released as this reaction occurs, producing a classic squeaky pop.
