Gorge on the Alcantara river, Sicily. This river flows through an old lava flow from the nearby volcano Mount Etna. As the water cooled the lava, it solidified into tall basalt columns, through which the river eroded steep_sided channels such as this one. The cross_sections of the old columns are seen on the rocks as a semi_regular pattern of tiling.
