Liposome structure formation. Light microscopy footage of a thin film of cationic lipids forming liposome structures in water. The cationic lipid used here is called DOTAP. As it swells in the water, it naturally assembles into structures known as myelin figures and multilamellar liposomes. Liposome is a term for an artificial vesicle consisting of a lipid bilayer, which can be prepared for use in administrating nutrients, pharmaceutical drugs, or other materials. In this case, DOTAP liposomes are commonly used for DNA complexation to form lipoplexes, structures used in transfection transferring genetic material into cells.
