Model of ocean currents with sea surface temperatures. Temperatures are colour_coded from dark blue zero degrees Celsius to red 30 degrees. The large_scale pattern of global currents is clearly seen, including the westward_flowing equatorial currents, the warm northeastward_flowing Gulf Stream, the very cold eastward_flowing Antarctic Circumpolar current, and the circular Agulhas Rings that move northwest from South Africa. Ocean currents are generally created and maintained by prevailing surface winds, which in turn are established by the Coriolis effect of the Earth磗 rotation. The data were gathered from 10th January 2005 to 10th January 2006, and visualised using NASA磗 ECCO2 model.
