The sequence of bases along the DNA strand determines the protein produced. Genes can be switched on and off by a variety of factors, including environmental factors, that elicit a heritable chemical change to the DNA molecule. The study of the heritability of gene expression, as distinct from DNA sequence, is known as epigenetics.
