Geometry of the Moon磗 orbit. The white ring shows the path of the Moon around the Earth, and the green plane shows the Earth磗 equatorial axis at the equinoxes when the Sun appears over the equator. The bright white dots are called the lunar nodes. A lunar eclipse can only occur when the Moon is at one of the nodes near an equinox, which occur in late March and late September each year.
