18th century illustration of a red-necked nightjar (Caprimulgus ruficollis), the largest of the nightjars occurring in Europe. It breeds in Iberia and north Africa, and winters in tropical west Africa. Bird of prey from Histoire Naturelle des Oiseaux d'Afrique (Natural History of Birds of Africa), Volume 1, by Franeois Le Vaillant (1753-1824), published in Paris, France in 1799.
