Aluminite is a hydrous aluminium sulphate (Al2SO4(OH)4?H2O) It usually occurs as greyish-white botryoidal masses of a soft nature, the size of a golf ball or somewhat larger. They form by aggregation in clay or lignite deposits, always amorphous and never crystalline. It has no use as an ore for aluminium. This specimen is from Halle, in Southern Germany, actual width is 75 mm.
