Chronic lymphocytic leukaemia, light micrograph. Chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL) is a type of cancer in which the bone marrow makes too many lymphocytes. It is the most common chronic leukaemia in adults. Diagnosis is typically based on blood tests finding high numbers of mature lymphocytes and smudge cells. Smudge or smear cells are remnants of abnormally fragile lymphocytes, due to cancer cells lack of vimentin, a cytoskeletal protein.
