Roger Bacon (c. 1214-1292) English Franciscan philosopher and scholar. In 1267, imprisoned in the Paris Franciscan Order monastery because of certain ?渟uspected novelties??in his teaching. Prohibited in publishing books and pamphlets, he is surreptitiously sending to Pope Clement lV secret extracts from his Opus Majus. This ranged over aspects of natural science, mathematics, physics, philosophy, grammar and logic which were based on his studies of Aristotle, Euclid, Plato, al-Haytham and the translations of Greek and Islamic learning. An early proponent of the experimental method he predicted developments in the science of optics, mechanical land, air and undersea transport etc.
