Dennis Gabor (1900-1979), Hungarian-British physicist and electrical engineer. Gabor studied and worked in Germany before he fled the Nazis for Britain in 1933. In 1948 he discovered the principles of holography, the technique of storing three-dimensional data by optical imaging. The first hologram was produced in 1963 once coherent light sources (lasers) had been invented. Gabor was awarded the 1971 Nobel Prize in Physics for his work on holography. Photographed in 1971.
