Illustration of a dilated oesophagus, or megaoesophagus. The oesophagus has become abnormally enlarged due to achalasia, a failure of smooth muscle fibres to relax. The achalasia has caused the lower oesophageal sphincter, between the oesophagus and stomach (bottom right) to remain closed. Megaoesophagus can cause difficulty swallowing and the retention of food within the oesophagus.
