Ensisheim meteorite fall. Woodcut showing the fall of a meteorite in 1492 near the villages of Ensisheim and Battenheim (both labelled), then in Germany, now in the Alsace region of France. This is the oldest meteorite whose fall can be dated precisely, to noon on 7th November 1492. The arrival of the meteorite as a meteor was preceded by a loud explosion followed by an impact that formed a 1-metre deep crater in a wheat field. The remains of the meteorite were later put on display in the main hall of Ensisheim's 16th-century Regency Palace. The castle (left) was built in the 13th century.
