Hawksbill and loggerhead sea turtles, 19th-century illustrations. Across top are two illustrations of a hawksbill sea turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata). At lower centre is an illustration of a loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta). Both these sea turtles reach lengths of over a metre. They are found worldwide in tropical and subtropical waters. At bottom, earlier taxonomic names for these sea turtles are given as Testudo imbricata and Testudo caretta respectively. The French names are also given as 'caret' and 'couane' respectively.
