Gun deck, Pendennis Castle, Cornwall, late 1540s (c1990-c2010). Reconstruction drawing showing the upper gun deck in action. England was at war with France from 1542-1546 and again in 1549. Built during the reign of Henry VIII, Pendennis and its sister fortress at St Mawes guarded the approaches to Falmouth Harbour.
