^ILeptodactylus bolivianus^i, the South American bullfrog. This male specimen was photographed on the Caribbean island of Trinidad. The forelimbs of the male are well developed & muscular, which together with a spine on the thumb are used to hold the female during the mating embrace (amplexus). The grip from this frog is sufficiently strong to break the skin of a human. The genus ^ILeptodactylus^i are nest- building frogs, laying their eggs in foam masses, which are placed in or near the water. Although frogs are generally not aggressive towards each other, ^IL. ^Ibolivianus^i is known to push intruders out of their nests.
