Illustration of the Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer (Juice) spacecraft and Europa. The Juice spacecraft was launched on 14 April 2023 by the European Space Agency (ESA) and will embark on an eight-year journey to Jupiter and its icy moons. The solar wings are the largest ever flown on an interplanetary mission. The size is essential to generate sufficient power for the spacecraft and instruments so far from the Sun. The mission plans to study three large Galilean moons; Ganymede, Callisto and Europa. Europa is made of silicate rock; it has a water-ice crust and likely an iron?“nickel core. It has the smoothest surface of any known solid object in the Solar System which has led to the theory that a water ocean exists beneath the surface, which could possibly hold extraterrestrial life. The first Europa flyby will take place in July 2032.
