Ocular rhinosporidiosis, computer illustration, and the same healthy person for comparison. This disease affects the eyes, and can cause discomfort and disfigurement if left untreated. Ocular rhinosporidiosis is a rare disease caused by the parasite Rhinosporidium seeberi. The infection can affect the nose, eyes, throat, skin, and other parts of the body. It is most commonly found in tropical and subtropical regions, especially in India and Sri Lanka. The infection occurs when the parasite enters the body through a cut or wound on the skin or mucous membrane. Once inside the body, the parasite forms cysts and grows, causing the formation of polyp-like structures in the nose and eyes. The polyps can grow to be quite large, causing discomfort, obstruction of breathing, and disfigurement.
