Artwork of Hallucigenia sparsa. This bizarre creature - of which three species are known - lived in the Cambrian seas around 500 million years ago. It belongs to a group of Paleozoic animals related to tardigrades (water bears), velvet worms and arthropods. Of the three known species, H. sparsa show here was the largest, at about 6cm in length.
