MODEL RELEASED. Head lice examination. Doctor checking a six year old girl for head lice (Pediculus humanus capitis). Head lice measure 2-3 millimetres in length. They live in the hair of the head and suck blood from the scalp, causing intense itching. The itching provokes scratching, which can lead to scalp inflammation or dermatitis. Nits are the tiny eggs laid by head lice which are glued to hairs close to the scalp. Treatment is with medicated shampoo.
