Light micrograph showing structures of the fungus Trichophyton mentagrophytes. THe hair-like filaments (hyphae) absorb nutrients and can join to form networks in some fungi. The macroconidia (ovals) and microconidia (small dots) are two different forms of spore, which are the reproductive units of T. mentagrophytes. This species can cause dermatophytoses (skin diseases) in pets and humans, commonly known as ringworm or tinea. Dermatophytosis causes raised, red patches of skin and can cause hair loss. Treatment usually involves topical antifungal medication for around 1-2 weeks.
