The Engraving...presents a view of the piles and scaffolding erected for the purpose of building a bridge [ie the Cannon Street Railway Bridge], which is to connect the Charing-cross Railway and the South-Eastern Railway...with the intended City station in Cannon-street...A part of London Bridge, with the Tower in the distance, is seen behind the huge timber framework that stretches half way from the Surrey to the Middlesex side. The warehouses of Adelaide Wharf and those of the Old Swan Pier, below and above bridge respectively, look down upon the traffic of steam-boats which ply to and from the floating platforms or pontoons moored for the passengers landing. Fishmongers Hall is just seen above the houses at the Old Swan. The spires and turrets of half-a-dozen City churches, with the Monument, "Londons pillar," lifting its head above them all, complete this familiar scene, one feature of it alone being unfamiliar - the works now going on for the construction of the railway bridge.
