Landing of Sir Rutherford Alcock, K.C.B., at Yokohama, Japan, 1864. Engraving of ...a sketch by Mr. Wirgman, our Special Artist, which...represents the landing of Sir Rutherford Alcock, her Majestys Plenipotentiary in Japan, who has returned to that country, and arrived by the Argus on the 2nd of March. We see him escorted by a detachment of the 20th Regiment and a few Horse, under the command of Captain Applin, drawn up on each side of the pier. These British troops, however, which were sent on from Shanghai to be the guard of our Envoy in Japan, have since been sent back, Sir Rutherford Alcock being of opinion that no display of martial force is needed to secure the respect of the Japanese Government and people.
