Peter Higgs (1929-2024), British theoretical physicist, at the ALICE (a large ion collider experiment) detector, CERN (the European particle physics laboratory) near Geneva, Switzerland. ALICE is designed to study quark-gluon plasma produced by high energy ion (lead) collisions in the large hadron collider (LHC) particle accelerator. Experiments at the LHC lead to the discovery of the Higgs boson, an elementary particle predicted by the Standard Model of particle physics. Higgs, along with Francois Englert, was awarded the 2013 Nobel Prize in Physics for the discovery of the Higgs field.
