Vulcan Centaur rocket carrying the Peregrine lunar lander positioned on the launch pad at Cape Canaveral, Florida, USA on the 5th of January 2024. The rocket launched on the 8th of January 2024, as part of NASAs Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) programme. The objective was for Peregrine to land on the Moon, gather data on its atmosphere, and test advanced solar arrays (collections of solar panels). Though the rocket launch itself was successful, a propellant leak meant that the lander was never able to reach the Moon, and was instead commanded to self-destruct on the 18th of January 2024.
