Gross specimen of an opened gallbladder with acute cholecystitis. Cholecystitis is inflammation of the gallbladder. The most common cause of acute cholecystitis is gallstones. The patient presents with acute abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and fever. This gallbladder is distended and the mucosal lining shows intense congestion due to inflammation.
