Solitary oryx, also known as a gemsbuck, (Oryx gazella) on the edge of the Etosha salt pan, in Etosha National Park, Namibia. This large endorheic salt pan, forms part of the Kalahari Basin in the north of Namibia. It is a hollow in the ground in which water may collect or in which a deposit of salt remains after water has evaporated. These large antelopes eat grass and leaves and can go without water for long periods. Both the male and the female have horns, which are effective weapons and are held between their forelegs during conflicts in order to impale the enemy.
