Morning view (Nihon-bashi, asa-no-kei) subtitle of second state: gyoretsu furude (processional Standard-bearers). This print shows the middle class during the late Edo period. Located on the bridge over the Kamo River, in the early morning, is a seen of daimyos procession crossing bridge, two porters carrying red boxes followed by two standard-bearers. Just past the bent over figures are rows of samurai marching in unison and then a dark silhouette of the city roofs and shops, and stores. In the forefront are six street hawkers, all carrying loads of heavy merchandise. Caught in the middle is a fishmonger balancing a shallow tray of fish on his head. A man on the left can barely be seen hidden behind the gate. Facing us is a man wearing a brown kimono. Next to him on the left is another man, wearing a checkered kimono and indigo spotted headcloth (okosozukin), caring huge bundles of furoshiki.
