Scattered Pines along Tone River (Tone-gawa, Barabara-matsu) From the Series One Hundred Famous views of Edo, Ando Hiroshige, Japanese, 1797¡V1858, Woodblock print in colored ink on paper, This picturesque scene of fishermen casting nets provides the motif for a spectacular woodblock print. The right side shows a net in mid-flight with its border of led weights fanning out the trap. Other fishermen in the background are seen in various stages of hauling in their nets. Light green grasses complement the snarling dark pine trees in the middle of the print. The delicate embossed work, known as nunomezuri, on the white sail, is highlighted by the subtle hues of blues used in the water and the sky. These naturalistic details are similar to the work of Dutch genre painters who employed the technique called tour de force. At first glance, this simple palette may appear dull but encompasses an animated trawling scene., Japan, 1856, landscapes, Print, Print
