The Frith Stool, or Sanctuary Chair, at Hexham, 1861. A ...stone chair...still preserved at Hexham, is the identical "Frith Stool," or "Fridstol - from frith, peace; stol, seat - which for ages was the sanctuary chair of the famous monastery in that town. It is the only one known to exist in this country at the present day. A 7th/8th century cathedra or throne at Hexham Abbey in Northumberland. From "Illustrated London News", 1861.
