Macedonian wall painting of the plundered limestone cist tomb at Aigai, Vergina, also known as Tomb I, dating from the third quarter of the 4th century. It depicts the abduction of Persephone by Hades, Persephones mother Demeter is seated in an adjacent painting on the "mirthless rock". This wall-painting is not only remarkable for its artistic merit but also for its pictorial technique. The extensive use of incised outlines indicates that the artist composed his work on the wet plaster, changing his mind as he went along. We see here a forerunner of the al fresco technique. Hades can be seen driving his 4 horse chariot whilst grasping Persephone with his left arm. Below right Oceanis recoils in horror.
