Fete at Norton Hall, the seat of C. Cammell, Esq., 1860. Event to celebrate the 50th birthday of landowner, businessman and manufacturer Charles Cammell. Every employee at the Cyclops [Steelworks, in Sheffield], with his wife and children, to the number of nearly 3000...[was] entertained by Mr. Cammell...There were cut up at dinner 2 bullocks, 4 sheep, 28 lambs, 4 calves, 60 hams, 250 plum-puddings; 500 four-pound loaves, buns, cakes, and wine; 44 thirty-six gallon barrels of ale; with ducks and fowls innumerable. After dinner, cricketing, hurdle and foot racing, archery, bands of music for dancers, racing in sacks, and every approved Sheffield pastime made the day quickly pass away...Norton Hall is situated on the slope and crown of a hill, with prospects of great beauty in every direction...[It is] a large Grecian pile, with an east front, decorated with copies in marble of statues by Canova.
