Mrs. Little [the mayoress] said..."I have the pleasure of appearing before you for the purpose of presenting to you these testimonials of appreciation of the manner in which you have come forward at the call of your country. They express the interest which we, in common with all our countrywomen, feel at the success of this patriotic movement, which has called down the admiration of our Sovereign herself...Captain White: I present you with this trumpet - Captain Garfit: I present you with this bugle; and may they never sound but for the peaceful purpose of calling you to muster. But, if it should be necessary that they should be used on the bloody field of war, may your actions be in accordance with the motto engraven on them - Vigilant and Ready."...After three hearty cheers had been given for the ladies, the rifle company went through a variety of skirmishing manoeuvres, and finished by firing a volley. The Artillery fired a salute of 21 guns...A number of the members of both corps afterwards assembled at the Peacock Inn, where host Jackson had provided an excellent dinner.
