Frogs in Writing Contest, c. 1738, Ogawa Haritsu, Japanese, 1663 - 1747, 10 3/8 ¡Ñ 43 1/2 in. (26.35 ¡Ñ 110.49 cm) (image), Ink and color on paper, Japan, 18th century, Originally part of a handscroll, in the manner of the 12th- or 13th-century Frolicking Animals and Humans featuring winsome anthropomorphized animals, this fragment was later remounted as a hanging scroll. The ungainliness of the frogs pokes fun at the perceived refinement of calligraphy, poetry, and other courtly pastimes.
