OSIRIS-REx (Origins Spectral Interpretation Resource Identification Security Regolith Explorer) asteroid mission sample return capsule shortly after touching down at the Department of Defense's Utah Test and Training Range, USA, on 24th September 2023. The spacecraft launched on 8 September 2016, arriving at the asteroid 101955 Bennu in December 2018. After searching for a safe site it successfully collected samples of dust and rocks from Bennu's surface on 20th October 2020 and began its return to Earth on 10th May 2021. Upon landing the estimated 250 grams of samples were quickly connected to a continuous flow of nitrogen to prevent contamination. The samples are thought to be from the formation of the Solar System, 4.5 billion years ago, and will help scientists understand the origins of water and organic molecules.
