Woman receiving one of the first of the updated COVID-19 vaccine immunisations. The FDA authorised adapted versions of the Pfizer and Moderna mRNA vaccines. The adapted vaccines target one of the most widely circulating strains, the Omicron XBB 1.5 subvariant. The new vaccine works in the same way as the original vaccine by causing the immune system (the body?™s natural defences) to produce antibodies and blood cells that work against the virus, giving protection against COVID-19. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are recommending one dose of the booster for everyone six months and older in the USA. The people at highest risk are those older than 75, with underlying health conditions and those who are immunocompromised. Photographed in Detroit, Michigan, USA on 18 September 2023.
