The 2015 Paris Agreement was an international treaty with the goal to keep the rise in average global temperature to well below 2 C above pre-industrial levels and preferably to no more that 1.5 C. In 2023 the World Meteorological Organization calculated that there was a 66% chance of at least one in the next five years exceeding the 1.5 C threshold a 32% chance that the average temperature over that time would exceed the threshold.
