Flames and smoke from wildfires burning on the Greek island of Rhodes on 23rd July 2023. Natural colour and infrared data have been combined to highlight the fire front (orange). The fires started on the 19th July in the island's central mountainous regions after southern Europe experienced a heatwave with temperatures in excess of 40 degrees Celsius. Strong winds spread the fire to the coast and necessitated the evacuation of thousands of residents and tourists. The burnt area (brown) seen here covers approximately 110 square kilometres. Data obtained by the Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellite.
